Sport Science is thrilled to announce our partnership with GOOD.is in their Take Back Tuesday initiative, which calls to make Voting Day a national holiday. As part of this movement, Sport Science employees can rest easy as they head to the polls on Tuesday, November 6, because they’ll be on a paid vacation day.
At the heart of the Take Back Tuesday movement is the question, “How can our democracy thrive when voting, perhaps our most broad-reaching civic duty, must be squeezed into what odd hours we can find for it?”
Do you even know why we vote on Tuesdays? Most Americans, even congressmen do not. Americans started voting on Tuesdays in 1845. At that time, most citizens had to pack up their horse and buggy and travel to the polls. To avoid travel on the Sabbath, it was decided that Tuesday was the logical voting day so citizens could travel on Monday. 167 years later this designated voting day just doesn’t make sense anymore. Perhaps the inconvenience of Tuesday voting is partially to blame for Americans abysmal voter turnout. Could it be that Americans aren’t voting because their work schedules don’t allow for travel time to the polls and the inevitable lines that follow?
Sport Science is not concerned with their employees’ candidate of choice, only that they show up at the polls and make a choice… and the company what it can to facilitate easy voting. Sport Science founder and president, Neal Caplowe, explains, “I feel we have become complacent about voting – we need to recommit ourselves. Voting is our most important responsibility in a democracy.”
GOOD’s voting movement is gaining attention among its online community members, including actor Rainn Wilson, who is an active member of the GOOD community and stars in the movement’s promotional video. While a number of businesses throughout the country have joined GOOD in this movement, Sport Science is the only apparel company registered at this time.
To further support this crusade, Sport Science is releasing a limited edition voting graphics. These graphics are available for purchase on the Sport Science website.
